The problem has moved from the poor inner cities to middle-class American neighborhoods and thus the concern has started to grow. The death toll from overdose deaths due to opioid drugs has grown so drastically over the past half of the decade that the lifespan in America is declining at a rapid rate. Overdose deaths due to heroin, prescription pain medications and other new synthetic opioids such as fentanyl have been hitting the nation where it hurts. In the inner city of Chicago there is a direct correlation between where there is gang violence police calls and overdose calls, the police are in the same neighborhoods daily for both of these issues. The difference? As sad as it may sound, the city is used to the gang violence, but the recent surge of overdose deaths due to heroin and other opioids has emergency responders working overtime.

In order to combat this recent surge in overdose deaths, a solution is to have treatment more available for those who suffer from the disease of addiction. The grasps of an opioid addiction is so strong that proper treatment has been failing more than proving to be successful. For those who are struggling with the addiction to opioid based drugs, treatment options must be more readily available. The best way to ensure safety surrounding the drug epidemic is for the addict to receive the proper addiction treatment needed. In Chicago, IL there are many different forms of drug rehab for those suffering from this deadly disease.

Levels of Care for Chicago Drug Rehab Programs

Medical Detox Facilities In Chicago Illinois

A proper medical detox is when the individual will begin to purge the harmful substances that were being abused. The most common substances that require a medical detox are alcohol, prescription opiates, prescription benzodiazepine, heroin, methadone, and some others. During the detox program, the individual is put on a medical taper and can be prescribed a variety of different medications custom medication plan specific to the client’s individual needs. During a proper medical detox the individual has 24/7 access to medical care and supervision.

The detox period is a fragile time because the individual will be experiencing extremely intense feelings of discomfort. The detox is draining emotionally as well as physically. In a quality medical detox, not only will the individual have medical care, but also therapy to manage the unstable emotions that come from the withdrawal process.

In-Patient Drug Rehab in Chicago (Residential Treatment)

In-patient rehab in Chicago also known as residential treatment, the client is in a live-in setting. The client is under 24 hour supervision and has access to around the clock medical services. Chicago Long-Term Drug Rehab Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Chicago’s long term drug rehab programs or PHP the client lives in an apartment-like setting and is transported daily to the clinical facility where they receive a treatment plan according to their individual needs at this level of care. Medications are administered in the clinical building. Groups are held daily and clients are still meeting with their personal therapist weekly. Groups are smaller and more intimate, the client is in specific groups according to their needs and address the core issues of their addiction.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP) in Chicago, IL

The Chicago IOP is focused on moving the external structure of a PHP program into an internal structure clients can follow on their own. We provide all the same therapeutic services, but for less time each day. In the first phase of a Newark IOP, clients will attend group up to five times per week. Phase two occurs when employment is obtained. When this happens, the group requirements drops to a minimum of three days a week. Groups are still held daily (with am and pm options) while the clinical program centers around integrating clients into the larger recovery community locally. IOP groups focus on relapse prevention and developing responsible behaviors and coping skills in order to be productive member of society.

Medication Assisted Treatment in Chicago, is the idea of a medication prescribed along with therapy. There are many different medications that can be prescribed to aid in the healing process for addiction treatment. We see medication assisted treatment most successful with clients who struggle with opioid and alcohol addiction. Opioids are prescription pain medications and other drugs like morphine and heroin. According to NIDA, medication assisted treatment has been proven up to 62% more effective than traditional 12-step methods for addiction when it comes to opioid dependency.

All clients receiving a prescription in a Chicago, IL MAT program are also in group and individual therapy sessions to aid with the addiction treatment. We do not just prescribe our clients MAT medications and send them on their way, each client instead is in an addiction treatment program receiving therapy while on the medication.

As mentioned previously, there are many prescription medications that can be prescribed in MAT programming, some of the common brand names are Suboxone, Subutex, Vivitrol, and Methadone.

Chicago Suboxone/Subutex Treatment for Addiction

Suboxone for MAT in Chicago, is an option for those clients battling an opioid addiction. Opioids are prescription pain medications and other drugs like morphine and heroin. Suboxone has been proven successful in Medication Assisted Therapy for opioid treatment.

Suboxone is a prescription medication that includes the drugs Buprenorphine and Naloxone. Buprenorphine is known as an “opioid partial agonist” and like other opioids it can induce feelings of euphoria and respiratory depression. Being a partial agonist makes the drug weaker as an opioid and allows the buprenorphine to plug into the same receptors in an addicted individual’s brain who need that opioid presence in order to not experience withdrawal effects. The other ingredient, Naloxone is included to help prevent misuse of the Suboxone. It will cause withdrawal signs and symptoms if used in ways of abuse, such as injecting. These two drugs together make up Suboxone.

Suboxone is used to stop the cravings that clients experience while withdrawing from heroin and other opiates. A long term suboxone program blocks drug cravings and has been proven to reduce relapse. Suboxone maintenance programs are 50% more successful for opioid addiction treatment than the traditional 12-step model.

All clients receiving a prescription for Suboxone in a MAT program are also in group and individual therapy sessions to aid with the addiction treatment. We do not just prescribe our clients Suboxone and send them on their way, each client instead is in an addiction treatment program receiving therapy while on the medication.
