Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Romance Relationships
It isn’t uncommon for addicts to start a relationship while in treatment, and continue as using buddies after being discharged to come across situations when both partners feed off each other fueling their addictions. While it’s true that such scenarios can be difficult to handle, it isn’t impossible to work towards recovery together.
There aren’t many rehab centers willing to accept couples. There is a common belief that it is difficult to get sober when you’re in a relationship with an active addict. At Stepping Sober, we choose to think differently. If just one of the partners decides to go to rehab for recovery, the persistent substance abuse by the other partner can trigger relapse for the former once he/she gets back home after the treatment is completed. In addition to this, the avoidance of help could cause a lot of problems for both partners, including financial loss, relationship challenges, mental and physical illness and so on.
It is important for rehab centers accepting couples to devise specialized recovery programs that focus on different aspects of parallel recovery for the couple. For example, at Stepping Sober, we have physicians with extensive training in the field of marriage counseling, sexual issues and other critical areas.
It is imperative to understand that if both partners in a marriage or relationship are looking to get sober, it is possible to help them recover at the same time. While attending rehab together, couples can get tools for managing their individual addictions and understand each other’s distinctive cravings and triggers. This in turn can prevent relapse.
Couple’s Recovery at Stepping Sober
At Stepping Sober, we welcome couples seeking recovery together to our rehab center. We offer facilities like couples apartments to make you feel comfortable as you undergo treatment. In case the apartments are full, you can call us to enquire about our house.
One of the key elements of couple’s therapy is motivation. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the inherent motivation of a person to make changes to their life and embrace recovery is a critical aspect of the treatment. There is an increased chance of the person completing the treatment with dedication and focus needed for sustaining recovery in the long run.
Programs that treat couples together, such as that designed at Stepping Sober, this much-needed motivation gets reinforced as a result of the continued support and commitment of the couple to each other.
At Stepping Sober, we offer a specialized addiction treatment along with personal therapy to couples at the rehab facility. We believe that it is vital to target relationship issues in addition to the addiction problem. Besides counseling and other treatment techniques, we also organize family events where your children can come and participate while also becoming aware about the disease. It is a great way for them to spend some time with their parents who are recovering at our rehab center.
How it Works
Phase1: At the start of your couple’s recovery program, you will go through a process called ‘detox’. This procedure helps get your body back to its normal state. At this point it is important to state that as opposed to the common belief, you will not experience any withdrawal issues during the detox process. You can relax and spend time watching movies or playing video games. To make your recovery stay even more comfortable, we have facilities such as a 24 hour gourmet food kitchen where you can enjoy eating wholesome meals.
The first phase of the recovery program is quite intensive. In this phase, you will be educated about ‘addiction as a disease’ and participate in group therapy five days every week. This is combines with individual therapy a minimum of two times each week.
At Stepping Sober, you will be assigned a primary therapist who will design a personalized treatment that matches your recovery goals.
Phase 2: The second phase of recovery requires the couple to meet our clinical staff for creating a treatment plan that aids relationship recovery. In a couple’s recovery program, it is important to confront the challenges involved in rebuilding relationships that have been affected by addiction. For example, re-establishing communication and intimacy are some of the areas addressed during the counseling sessions. This part of the treatment helps partners observe old patterns and identify ways of changing them before the treatment is completed.
The counseling in this phase takes place at three different levels-individual, group and couple. At Stepping Sober, we also organize events like paint-ball, boating, bowling and ice-skating to boost recovery. These events present great opportunities to begin reconnecting with your partner when both are sober and clean.
Why Couple’s Therapy is Important
There is ample research to suggest that substance abuse has a significant impact on relationships. In fact, it is quite difficult to get back to the life that a couple shared before the addiction/substance abuse kicked in. Even after a person completes treatment, there is a risk that he or she might relapse. Further, there could be emotional and even physical injuries that are nearly irreversible. Most affected couples unconsciously tend to develop destructive relationship habits like codependency, enabling substance abuse and so on. It is critical reverse these habits before either of the two partners can progress in recovery.
Stepping Stone: A Rehab Center that Welcomes Couples
The fact is that while there are several rehab centers which accept couples seeking recovery, they do so be providing them with separate lodging facilities. This may not work for a lot of couples. At Stepping Sober, we provide couples lodging so that partners can share a room with each other.
In addition to this, we do not consider marriage as the sole criteria for couple’s admission at Stepping Sober. Our specialized couple’s therapy program is also offered to those couples who are in a relationship and not married.
If you’re seeking to create a healthy, happy and fruitful life for you and your partner, contact Stepping Sober to begin your recovery treatment.
