We fully understand that going through addiction treatment and trying to tackle substance abuse issues aren’t easy. Anyone trying to work through their substance abuse and the behavioral health issues that typically go along with it has a lot on their plate. That is why we want people who come to us for help in these situations to focus on getting well again. It is only then that they will truly be able to recover and heal.
Unfortunately, there are some recovery facilities that, while helpful when it comes to substance abuse, aren’t always equipped to help their patients focus solely on getting well. This is particularly true when it comes to behavioral health billing. We want all of our patients to feel like they can get away from the stress of something like billing and focus on their treatment. That is why we offer billing and processing for each of our patient’s specified needs.
3 Ways We Help Our Patients with Behavioral Health Billing
There are three ways that we help our patients when it comes to billing and processing.
- We Verify Your Insurance at the Very Beginning
Insurance coverage isn’t always 100 percent straightforward. We understand this, which is why we will do the research necessary to verify insurance. This can be a time-consuming process at times, especially during peak hours of the day when insurance companies are the busiest. But, we view the time put into this research as time well spent. After all, getting the proper insurance information will help us to treat our patients in the most effective way possible, and save them a lot of time, and sometimes frustrations.
During our verification inquiry, we will find out which benefits our patients are eligible for under their particular policy. We will also find out what information is required by the insurance company in order to submit each claim properly.
- We Take Care of All the Paperwork
Paperwork is a hassle. There’s no reason for our patients to have to deal with this kind of inconvenience when they’re trying to recover from addiction. Behavioral health billing and processing for addiction treatment is very detail-oriented work. That is why we have trained billing professionals who know how to bill properly, using the correct substance abuse and behavioral health billing codes. Utilizing the proper codes prevents the possibility of an insurance company denying a claim.
Another reason an insurance company may deny a claim is because of a lack of sufficient information. Insurance companies often require proof of necessity—they need to know why a patient needs the treatment recommended or provided. Our billing professionals know which procedures need such information. Providing this extra information right from the start is yet another way our billing professionals prevent potential claim denials.
- We Take Care of Collections Processing
Sometimes, insurance companies either don’t get the information they need from a claim or they make a mistake on their end and incorrectly deny a claim. That’s where our collections department comes into play. Some facilities don’t have the time or the expertise to recognize that an initially declined claim isn’t necessarily the final word. In some cases, there is a lot that can be done to rectify the situation.
First, our team of billing professionals will determine why the claim was denied. If an error occurred on their end—for example, additional information required by the insurance company wasn’t included with the claim—they will resubmit the claim with the required information. Sometimes, the fault lies with the insurance company—they made a mistake on their end and incorrectly denied a claim. In order to find out exactly what happened, our billers will contact the insurance company and get to the bottom of the matter.
There have been some instances when a claim gets lost. On our end, we keep an eye on when electronic claims have been received by the insurance company. However, this doesn’t mean that slip-ups aren’t bound to occur on the insurance company’s end. They receive thousands of claims each day; every once in awhile there are some that slip through the cracks. Our billers know when to expect a payment for a claim from the insurance companies. If a payment isn’t received, they will contact the insurance company right away to find out if the payment is en route, the claim is pending review, or if the claim simply got lost.
As one can imagine, dealing with the billing, claims processing, and insurance collections can be time-consuming. That’s why we focus on the process—so our patients don’t have to. Their focus right now needs to be on healing.
Why We Do In-House Behavioral Health Billing
Some of our competitors hire a third party company to take care of their billing and insurance collection needs. Why?
- They don’t have the staff on-hand to take care of this type of work.
- Their administrative staff doesn’t have the skills needed to take care of billing and processing.
The issue we have with hiring a third party to take care of our treatment billing needs for us is that we are extremely concerned with our patients’ privacy. While many companies work hard to provide effective measures to care for privacy needs, we feel that when we take care of the billing via in-house employees that’s just one less thing for us and our patients to worry about.
Our commitment to our patients’ wellbeing, their treatment, and to their privacy is just one more reason why our patients are so happy with Stepping Sober. They see results because we really care.
